Galaxies in the Distant Universe:
Dynamics, Gas, and Early Evolution
Monday to Friday, May 17 &mdash 21, 2010
Schloß Ringberg, Bavaria, Germany
The venue for the workshop is
Schloß Ringberg (Ringberg Castle),
a turn of the century castle located in the foothills of the Bavarian
Alps, and overlooking the Tegernsee. Located about 70 km south of
Munich, the Tegernsee is a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains
and small resort villages. The peaceful location, meeting schedule,
and attendance limit of 60 set by the capacity of the venue are all
conducive to an informal workshop atmosphere offering many
opportunities for stimulating discussion.
Travel to Munich:
The Munich Franz-Josef Strauss Airport lies approximately 17 km
and 30 km north-east of Garching and Munich, respectively.
Most major carriers offer service to Munich, although often with
stopovers involved on the more distant (North American, for example)
routes. There are many cheap fares available if you shop around,
and these will normally require staying over one Saturday night.
Munich Central Station can be reached from anywhere within Europe.
From there, there are good public transportation connections to
all of Munich. There are even railway connections to Tegernsee,
in the vicinity of Schloß Ringberg.
Schloß Ringberg is located about 70 km SE of Munich. For those
interested in driving directly to the castle, the Local Committee
can send out detailed maps and instructions in advance of the
workshop. Most major car rental companies have branches at the
Munich Airport. Cars usually need to be reserved in advance,
and rates are often more favorable if the cars are booked by an
overseas travel agent. There is ample parking at the castle,
and at the hotels in Kreuth-Weissach and Rottach-Egern near
For those staying in Munich either before or after the workshop,
note that parking can be a problem there and is often quite
expensive as well.

Update on bus and shuttle schedules (May 10)
Information about the schedule, meeting points, and signed-up
participants for bus and shuttle transportation from the
airport to Ringberg on Sunday May 16 is now posted
We have hired a bus to take participants from Munich Intl Airport
to Ringberg Castle on Sunday, 16 May, leaving the airport at 3:00 PM.
The bus pick-up point should be in front of the arrivals area in
Terminal 1, Block C.
LOC members will be at the Munich airport to greet participants
and show them the way to the bus on Sunday starting around 2:00 PM.
One person will be posted at the arrivals area of Terminal 2 (for
Lufthansa and Star Alliance flights), and another will be at the
arrivals area of Terminal 1, Block C. They will be carrying signs
indicating the Max-Planck Institute, so that you
can easily identify them. If you arrive on Sunday morning and have some
time to kill before the bus leaves, there is a large shopping center,
restaurants, and showers, etc., available at the Munich airport.
You can check the
for more information.
The bus will return participants to Munich airport on Saturday, 22 May.
The bus will depart from Ringberg Castle at around 8:30-9:00 AM
immediately after breakfast, and will arrive at the airport
about 1.5 hours later, depending on traffic.
Additional transportation options
On Sunday, 16 May, we plan 1 or 2 smaller shuttle vans from the
airport to Ringberg for participants arriving between around 2:00
and 6:00 PM (counting on 30min - 1h for collecting luggage, and
clearing passport control and customs), or in case earlier flights
The pick-up location will be the same as for the bus, in front of
Terminal 1, Block C. The exact schedule will be arranged once we
have the travel details of all participants.
Depending on demand, there may be a smaller shuttle van from Ringberg
to Munich airport on Friday evening, 21 May, and on Saturday morning,
22 May, at an earlier time than the bus.
If you have not already indicated whether you will take the bus
to and/or from Ringberg, please let us know until Thursday,
May 6, in a short email message.
For participants who can only attend part of the workshop, or for
those arriving later than 6:00 - 6:30 PM on Sunday when the LOC will
all have left for Ringberg already, it will be necessary to take a
train and taxi to Ringberg from the Munich area. The instructions on
how to do this, complete with train schedules, can be found
Meals and Lodging
The LOC will pay for lodging and meals of all participants for the
duration of the workshop. We have arranged that everyone stay either
at Ringberg Castle or at the Hotels Leykauf and Sonnenhof in the nearby
villages of Kreuth-Weissach and Rottach-Egern.
You will receive an email message with your arrangements by Thursday,
6 May. Please contact us immediately if you do not get this message.
Lunch and dinner will be provided for all participants at Ringberg Castle.
Unfortunately, we cannot pay for meals and lodging for accompanying guests.
Accompanying guests can have dinner at the castle for an extra charge.
Please send us an email asking about rates in this case. It would be
very helpful to the Ringberg staff and the LOC if you could let us know
at registration on Sunday evening which meals you will take at the Castle.
Vegetarian meals and other special dietary requests are happily
accommodated provided advance notice is given. If you have not already
indicated your special requests, please send us a short email message
soon --- you can verify in the acknowledgement email that you received
when you registered through the online registration form.
Daily transportation from the Hotels (about a 10-15 minute drive) will
be provided by the LOC in the morning in time for the first session,
and then again in the evening before dinner if requested and back to
the hotels after dinner after some socializing time. It will not be
possible for the LOC to provide transportation during the lunch break,
