Dear ISO Observer,
half a year after the launch of ISO, performance verification is done and
science observations have been conducted for almost four months. The satellite
and the instruments are performing almost flawlessly. As you will have heard,
the performance of the instruments is however affected to a larger degree
than anticipated by events due to ionizing radiation, leading basically to
increased noise. This triggered a need to revise part of the observing
programs. Nevertheless, calibrations and first science observations have
shown that ISO in fact performs close to what was envisaged in the initial
studies, and that it can produce the exciting science expected from a
cryogenic infrared observatory in space.
The purpose of this newsletter is to give you a brief update about data
reduction activities of the ISO Spectrometer Data Centre at MPE, and to
inform about an ISO splinter at the AG Herbsttagung 1996.
Data Reduction at ISOSDC @ MPE
==============================
Experience with data from the ISO performance verification phase has shown that
at the current status of the pipeline data reduction, data products distributed
on CDs to the observers will have to be viewed with caution. They do not fully
exploit the quality of the instruments and may be wrong and misleading. For
most cases and instrument modes, a careful interactive data reduction will
significantly enhance the quality of the result.
Expertise in processing SWS data with the SWS interactive analysis (IA) is
being built up at the Garching spectrometer data centre. Starting from
July 1996, the data centre will provide help for reduction of SWS data
to its supported community.
Support for LWS and possibly PHT-S will be added later, as soon as
expertise in those areas has been built up.
The basic operating mode of the ISOSDC will be that visitors will do the
data reduction themselves, with ISOSDC staff giving guidance.
Please be aware that limited manpower at the ISOSDC requires a few regulations:
- All visits have to be arranged in advance, at least two weeks before the
envisaged date!
The contact for this at ISOSDC is: isodata@mpe-garching.mpg.de (D.Kunze)
- During the learning phase for both visitors and SDC staff we will have to
strictly limit the number of visits.
We hope, we can be of help for your data analysis.
The data reduction takes places on DEC 3000 Alpha stations running OpenVMS.
The adopted data/image processing system is IDL.
ISO Splinter at AG Herbsttagung Tuebingen
=========================================
An ISO Splinter will be organised at the AG Herbsttagung in Tuebingen,
(September 16-20 1996). The splinter is planned for the afternoon of
Thursday, Sept. 19.
The purpose of the splinter is to allow for presentation of early scientific
results from ISO, in particular on topics such as stars and circumstellar
matter, the ISM, and external galaxies.
The splinter should also bring together instrument experts from the teams in
Heidelberg (ISOPHOT) and Garching (ISO-SWS) and ISO users from the general
community.
If you wish to give a short oral presentation, or just to be kept informed,
please return the following to
