PNS MANUAL: installation / control
How to connect the instrument to the laptop and controller
(notes on the old setup can be found in the old installation notes)
There is a laptop in the PN.S cupboard on which the control control gui is installed.
Store the laptop in the brown laptop bag. The bag should include a serial cable
which attaches to the serial port, at the other end it should be plugged into
socket 1 of the break-out boxes at the rear of the blue cabinets. If the cable is still hidden away under the floor
following a previous run, the end of the cable (a 9 pin connector) will be in the control room.
The V2 controller should befound in the pns cupboard unless it was
not removed from the 19" rack-mounted box at the WHT.
If necessary connect M1 to Shutter,
M2 to Mask,
M3 to Filter 1, M4 to Filter 2, and Uniblitz to "fast shutter".
Now connect the Controller to
the appropriate break-out-box (here socket 1) using a
standard 25 pin serial cable.
When complete the rear of the controller will
have the appearance shown in the photo.
Note that the connection
is to the SERIAL PORT IN socket.
Once this is done, it should
be possible to manually activate the shutter and mask,
and the Ha-c filters, using the buttons on the front
of the Controller.
Note on changing to a new PC
WHT Hookup: with PC in control room
things should now work - what if they don't?
- you will probably want the PC over near the
corner with the other control units (ULTRADAS, ICL)
- The cables from the instrument motors are normally
connected to the PNS box by Observatory staff, and the
cables are labelled with the number of the socket they should go in
- screw plugs in place where possible - otherwise
use strong tape to hold them together, especially at Cass
when all else has failed
- are you really connected to the SERIAL port?
- is the PC suitable (see above)?
- have you checked the connectors?
- there is a printed circuit in the PNS cupboard
which will drive one of the PNS motors between open
- during the Jul 01 commissioning run,
