PNS MANUAL: at the end of your run
Removal and Storage
In the following, the "cupboard" refers to the telescope area, which is where
the telescope team needs to find PNS parts required to mount and connect the instrument.
Other equipment has now been moved to the mezzanine cupboard (MC).
- Your last command to the PN.S-PC should be STATUS - check
that both mask and shutter are closed! If this is not done the
optics may be unprotected when the instrument is being handled.
The observatory team will remove the cryostats, and will need to find
the cover plates and screws. They will then remove the instrument
and again will need to find the cover plate and screws. Best
place for the covers and screws is on top of the PN.S cupboard. Store the nitrogen tube for the
cryostats in the cupboard.
Normally the cables and 19" rack will remain on the Cass. If they need
to be removed, store the cables in the cupboard and the 19" rack near the instrument
on the ground floor. Ask the staff to flush the instrument with
nitrogen at regular intervals.
The following is apparently no longer relevant, as the cable in question
is probably just left under the floor in the control room.
The cables connecting the PN.S-PC with the observing room "break-out box"
should be carefully disconnected, and stored in the designated
box in the MC. Note that the Special
cable for the PN.S PC (25-pin Y-piece) is custom
made and that the instrument depends on it. The PC itself, and the
monitor, needs to
be stored somewhere out of view.
Run through the list of items which are supposed to be in the
cupboard and warn the team if there
is anything missing!
- We believe that continuous flushing with dry air/nitrogen via the single
input gas flange will give the instrument sufficient protection from
moisture, as the gas will eventually diffuse through all chambers. A
more "planned" arrangement is discussed by J Hart in his email of 30.8.2001.
Something still needs to be done about the filters which are
not in the body of the instrument.
- Store any unused filters in INT Coude laboratory cupboard.
- Lock up MC and give keys to Kevin Dee. If he's not available, leave it on
Chris Benn's desk with note to give to Kevin.
- Make sure to photocopy observing logs, and make data tapes.
- Have "debriefing" meeting with ING staff if necessary.
